Tip #78: Humility

Mistakes are inevitable.

Effective leaders, however, recover from their mistakes quickly because they have the courage to recognize, own and do something about them. What does it mean to be humble?

As I reflect on this word, my thoughts are immediately focused on the fact that humility is an attitude, demonstrated in day-to-day behaviors and actions. Several characteristics of a humble leader include:

• Authenticity: living your values and clear of self-expectations

• Respectful: treating people as valued members of the organization

• Patient: open-minded with self and others

• Teachable: always learning and growing

• Grateful: thankful for those who work with and for you

• Forgiving: accepting of self and others, without judgment

• Celebrates: genuinely appreciates the accomplishments and talents of others
