Tip 81: Prepare for Difficult Conversations

What is your method for planning and preparing for difficult conversations?
Do you map out your talking-points?
Do you begin your preparations with the end-in-mind?
Do you just say what’s on your mind and see where the conversation goes?
Do you consider all possible perspectives and points-of-view?
Do you stumble through the conversation, worried about saying the wrong thing?
Do you procrastinate, hoping the issue just goes away or resolves itself?
Difficult conversations need attention and should be handled in a way that reflects an intentional process. Effective leaders plan a “conversation roadmap,” communicating objectives and key messages clearly, honestly and logically.
