Tip 81: Prepare for Difficult Conversations

What is your method for planning and preparing for difficult conversations?

  • Do you map out your talking-points?

  • Do you begin your preparations with the end-in-mind?

  • Do you just say what’s on your mind and see where the conversation goes?

  • Do you consider all possible perspectives and points-of-view?

  • Do you stumble through the conversation, worried about saying the wrong thing?

  • Do you procrastinate, hoping the issue just goes away or resolves itself?

Difficult conversations need attention and should be handled in a way that reflects an intentional process. Effective leaders plan a “conversation roadmap,” communicating objectives and key messages clearly, honestly and logically.
