Tip 100: Practicing Courage
In a recent article in the Harvard Business Review, How to Find and Practice Courage (2020), Manfred F.R. Kets de Vries explains that “Courage, like our personalities, is a product of both nature and nurture, of both the individual and her society, of both the person and the situation.”
Thinking of courage as a muscle and recognizing that some are born with better muscles, everyone can improve strength through training and practice.
Consider these techniques to help find and practice courage.
Create scenarios that explore the best and worst of a situation or issue.
Be aware of negativity bias and learn to reframe a problem in a more constructive way.
Identify what you are truly afraid of by opening-up about self-doubts and fears.
Practice small acts of courage by going out of your comfort zone.
Manage physical and mental wellbeing, combining healthy habits and relaxation techniques.
Recognize you are not alone. Try sharing your vulnerabilities, allowing others to connect and show their support.
