Delegation and Leadership

With many leaders, it is not uncommon to see them taking on too many projects, rather than delegating tasks. Critical activities and strategic planning tend to fall to the wayside when confronted with more pressing day-to-day tasks that require immediate attention.

Delegation promotes efficiency. With increasing workloads, smaller teams, and rapidly changing environments, delegation is key to ensuring that the team is as streamlined and productive as possible.

Delegation strengthens teams and develops team members. Collaboration is key when delegating tasks. When people are presented with tasks that align with their position and talents, they continue their path of professional development, learn new skills, and take on challenges that help garner resiliency.

Delegation increases motivation. Entrusting team members with consistent projects and important timelines offers reassurance and confidence that the work they do has value.  When people are provided the opportunity to take ownership of their work, they find that productivity and job satisfaction increases.  A motivated team is a happier team.

Delegation is a critical and essential ingredient for a leader’s success. Placing a high importance on delegation requires leaders to step back and assess their team strengths and motivations.  Doing this work can yield increased team efficiency and efficacy.
